China Maritime Safety Administration (China MSA) and Global Sustainable Transport Knowledge and Innovation Centre (GSTKIC) are pleased to launch a global call for contributions to the knowledge products under the Initiative on Global Sustainable Maritime Innovation Cooperation. Stakeholders worldwide are warmly welcome to share or recommend their expertise and insights.
A brief introduction is provided below for reference.
Background
The global maritime industry is currently undergoing a profound transformation driven by decarbonization, digitalization, and inclusive development. In response to IMO Resolution A.1205(34) on the Capacity-Development Strategy, adopted at the 34th IMO Assembly in 2025, and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, CHINA MSA and GSTKIC launched the Global Sustainable Maritime Innovation Cooperation Framework at the 2025 Sustainable Maritime Innovation Workshop in October 2025. The Framework aims to enhance capacity-building services, foster multi-stakeholder partnerships, and strengthen the maritime innovation capabilities of developing countries, with a particular focus on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
To translate the Framework’s vision into tangible action, two core knowledge products, namely, the Maritime Innovation Good Practices and the Maritime Innovation Brief, will be developed and launched at the 2026 Sustainable Maritime Innovation Workshop in October 2026. These two knowledge products are designed as practical, forward-looking tools to support global capacity-building for sustainable maritime development. By integrating international experience, cutting-edge insights, and successful models from around the world, they will provide replicable innovative ideas and implementation cases for all countries, especially developing nations.
Maritime Innovation Good Practices
A comprehensive compilation of successful and replicable sustainable innovations, experiences, and models from across the global maritime sector. It covers four key domains: ship technology and operations, port technology and management, maritime logistics and connectivity, and policy and mechanism innovation. This publication serves as a practical reference for countries seeking innovative ideas and strategies for implementing sustainable maritime projects, with a special focus on addressing the development needs of developing countries. More details could be found in the concept note for Maritime Innovation Good Practice in the attachments.
Maritime Innovation Brief
It analyzes emerging Science and Technology Innovation trends across the entire maritime transport value chain, including ship and port technology, maritime logistics, and cutting-edge equipment, systems, and operational innovations. It meets the global demand for forward-looking, comprehensive intelligence. Each brief provides overviews of emerging technologies, case studies, technology road-maps, tailored insights for developing countries, and actionable recommendations. It can offer strategic, practical guidance to help policymakers, industry leaders, and capacity-building institutions align their strategies with global maritime innovation trends. More details could be found in the concept note for Maritime Innovation Brief in the attachments.
In light of the features of the two knowledge products, the Maritime Innovation Good Practices (with the template in the attachments) should be recommended from an organizational perspective, while the Maritime Innovation Brief may be provided from either an organizational or personal perspective.
